Wednesday 21st May

Matt Fallaize gave me a grilling today. Listen to the audio here (I’m near the bottom, between Carl Meerveld and Jonathan Le Tocq): https://guernseypress.com/news/2025/05/22/election-2025-candidate-interviews.

The eco hustings this evening was very good, albeit only attended by about thirty members of the public because of clashes with the football, the corporation tax group’s first hustings and Safety Net’s drop-in. I was really pleased to see an event dedicated to such an important topic. Highlights for me were the extensive work Lindsay De Sausmarez, Victoria Oliver and Yvonne Burford have done in this area (whether it be in studies, activism or government) and the very strong performances of Tom Rylatt, Paul Montague and Neil Inder (who one wouldn’t normally associate with environmental causes but did surprisingly well). Me? I brought up some important points about energy resilience and security surrounding earmarked marine protected areas but it wasn’t my best performance. The Blue Marine Foundation (who organised and ran the event) said they would release the footage somehow. I will let you know more once I have the details.

Tomorrow: I won’t be there until later on if at all (Gsy Community Foundation candidate briefing) but you can see what Forward Guernsey members have to say under pressure this evening from 7pm at St. Martin’s Community Centre. Guernsey Chamber of Commerce / G8 are having their candidate event on Friday lunchtime. Deputies and candidates will be meeting the public again in their ongoing weekly island pub tour on Friday, this time in Queen’s from 4pm and Captain’s from 5:30. I’ll be attending the latter but can’t get out of work early enough to attend the former. For a full list of public events organised and published so far, there is a page on the WIPL website (https://womeninpubliclife.gg/index.php/2025/05/13/election2025-hustings-and-meet-the-candidates/).
