Thursday 12th June

I attended the Autism & Me meet-up this afternoon. So many parents anxious for the future and frustrated about the lack of provision. They all have harrowing stories to tell, are very clear about what their families would benefit from (usually respite and a supportive learning environment) and don’t have much left in the tank. In short, these are a prime example of who would fall through the cracks with the current GST+ package. That said, they are not the type to ask for handouts. They’re grafters (usually working in healthcare, education, finance or IT) and try their utmost for their families, with a keep calm and carry on (because no other option is available) attitude. They’re not shirkers. Many want an autism specialist school for those who need the curriculum but cannot cope with the usual school environment. This would need to be privately funded but the States might need to find a suitable site for them. Some want to club together to form an afterschool & school holidays club that they would man on a rotational basis. Mind blown.

John Gollop and I then went to Styx to hear the specialists at their hustings. I thought maybe the main hall had been double-booked but it turns out they weren’t expecting the turnout to be anywhere near so high. The panelists all had to put the “standing” back into standing for public office for two hours. There were several people (including John and myself) who had to stand outside. Paul Montague and Steve Williams did particularly well. Too many want P&R seats – I think I counted 7. Some will have to lose out unless they decide to increase the amount of seats on the committee. That’s if they get in. If the turnout this evening is any indicator, then I’m sure most will.

Tomorrow evening, I’ll be putting my banners up. On Saturday, you might see me patrolling the streets for votes if you’re in Town. If you’re attending the balcony gig at Cobo, you’ll notice my sign next door, which I’m sure will perturb a fellow candidate! Hehe.
