7th July – Committee Membership Appointments

I still don’t fully understand some of the appointments, but I’m sure John Gollop will enlighten me next time we meet. Some were clearly people’s first choices and are very good fits. The contest for Home Affairs was a surprise — both the proposer and the nominee were unexpected, as the two are not natural bedfellows. I suspect a motive for disruption. By and large, I’m very happy with the appointments.

SMC – Liam McKenna & Hayley Camp
ESC – Andy Cameron, Sarah Hansmann-Rouxel, Aidan Matthews (highest vote and probable VP), and Jayne Ozanne (a surprise)
ED – Rhona Humphreys, Hayley Camp, Andy Niles, Lee Van Katwyk (noted: all from finance except LVK; absence of Chris Blin stood out)
ESS – Garry Collins, David Dorrity and Jayne Ozanne (also a surprise)
E&I – Andy Cameron, Bruno Kay-Mouat, Alex Snowdon (Alderney), Sally Rochester
HSC – Aidan Matthews, Sally Rochester, Jennifer Strachan and Munazza Malik
Home Affairs – Alex Snowdon, Rob Curgenven (19 votes – lost by 2), Munazza Malik, John Gollop, Simon Vermeulen (proposed by Jayne Ozanne – 21 votes)
Housing – Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, David Dorrity (a surprise), Garry Collins, Rhona Humphreys
DPA – Marc Lainé (a surprise), Steve Williams, Sarah Hansmann-Rouxel, Lee Van Katwyk
SACC – Tom Rylatt, Yvonne Burford, Gavin St Pier (I hadn’t realised P&R members could serve on House committees), John Gollop
STSB – Bruno Kay-Mouat (23), Andy Niles (23), Yvonne Burford (proposed by Paul Montague – 19, lost by 4)
TLA – Ed Hill (Alderney), Alex Snowdon (disallowed due to now being on E&I), Garry Collins, Jayne Ozanne (a surprise) and Neil Inder (a last-minute substitution; not a surprise to me, but still a questionable appointment that raised eyebrows)

Panel of Members
This entity has one member of the Assembly and one Dean of a Douzaine appointed. I believe its purpose is to oversee disputes and uphold decorum. So imagine everyone’s surprise (and the snickering) when LDS proposed Neil Inder. The proposal of a Douzaine Dean was deferred. They’ll now need to find someone both willing to work with Inder and willing to risk a controversial term. Is it possible or has LDS just disabled an entity’s function by ensuring it’s never quorate?

Guille-Allès Library Council
I believe this oversees the library’s function. I’m unsure how all members are appointed. One is selected by P&R — this time, Jennifer Strachan. The other is selected by ESC — Paul Montague appointed Sarah Hansmann-Rouxel.

I don’t know when I’ll next attend a States meeting. The next one is scheduled for next week, I believe. Watch this space.
